The summer of 2020 saw Black Lives Matter protests erupt around the nation following the murder of George Floyd.
There were almost daily protests in Columbia, Missouri, as well that went on into the fall. Columbia's nickname is "Little Dixie" and the legacy of racial terrorism is strong in the community: in the spring of 2021, a week after a soil collection ceremony followed by the re-dedication of a marker honoring a lynching victim, the marker was cut off with a blow torch and thrown in a nearby river.
